On l'adore avec toutes ses faiblesses traversant la cour de Charles II d'Angleterre , visitant Versailles, séjournant dans un château en Suisse mais chérissant avant tout son manoir dans la campagne de Norfolk. On entre dans son intimité et dans son coeur car le roman écrit à la première personne nous permet de le connaitre dans toute sa complexité avec un regard sur lui-même teint d'ironie et d'auto-dérision.Rose Tremain est une excellente auteure. Ce roman est adroitement travaillé, mais jamais prétentieux ni pompeux. Elle a un regard plein d'humanisme pour ses personnages et un réel respect pour ses lecteurs. Comme dans "Restoration" on retrouve un style inspiré du 17ème siècle (avec de très sympathiques Majuscules !!) Quand elle compare le château de Versailles à une oeuvre musicale on ne peut qu'être impressionné !! Mais où est le 17émé siècle sans quelques scènes paillardes ? Je vous invite dans une diligence en partance pour la Suisse et vous ne passerez plus devant la bonne ville de Besançon dans le même état d'esprit !!C'est un roman abouti qui traite des thèmes universels: l'amour, l'amitié, l'angoisse face au vieillissement, la maladie et la mort. Et, en plus, on ne lit pas un roman historique mais on VIT dans le 17ème siècle .Pour décrire ce que j'ai ressenti en terminant cette lecture je ne peux que citer notre héros quand, après une soirée passée en compagnie de son roi, sa fille Margaret ainsi que quelques amis à jouer à "Shuttlecock", il dit : "we did not want these games to end .....it was as if all my Melancholy had been swept away from my heart and sent by the Shuttlecock into some faraway void."
